CHARACTER NAME: Julius Visconti
AGE: 20 21 from CRAU
CANON God Eater 2
HISTORY: tada

PERSONALITY:
「 The first Captain of the Blood Unit. A very intelligent young man with a firm sense of responsibility and a love for nature. He thinks of his teammates as his family. Being orphaned at a young age, he was adopted by Dr. Rachel and received an elite education. Because of this, he can be quite distant when it comes to interpersonal relations. 」
Julius' official description in the artbook sums him up quite well. Upon first impressions, he gives the aura of a competent and stoic leader. Being in a military setting, his formality contrasts strongly against the laid-back attitude of other captains present in the series. Canon states that he has the best ability of the Blood Unit (at first). Despite this, he never displays the proud attitude that one might associate with the elite. He uses his skill to lead his team and instruct them instead of using it as a pedestal to elevate himself. Even if he rarely emotes or displays strong emotions, his care for his allies shows itself in many ways. If there is something that he can improve on, he will put his best effort into doing it, be it skills, knowledge, or tasks.

His greatest strength is his willpower. His skill in combat and strategy are not inborn; to have attained it would mean years of study and training. It is with this willpower that he was able to reach the competency that he wields. Later on in his canon, he is subjected to what essentially amounts to six months of mental torment without respite. Of course, the intervention of his allies was needed to free him from that state, but even so he is able to come out of it without crippling damage to his psyche; a testament to the tenacity of his spirit. Tied to this is his stoic nature. He has enough control over his countenance to quash any sign of unnecessary feelings, and as a result he acts as a stabilizing force for his teammates. It takes the death of a dear friend to make his composure falter. Another thing that can draw out strong emotion from him is injustice - his calm only breaks when his allies fall, or if they are sent directly into situations that would kill them.

「 Julius is the commander who brings the Blood members together into a cohesive battle unit. His exceptional combat ability is not his only notable trait; he also possesses a keen eye for detail, resolute decisiveness, and a comprehensive knowledge of tactics and command. However, he rarely allows his emotions and feelings about his allies to show. As a result, a cruel fate befell him in the end.

Of course, it goes without saying that Julius is by no means perfect. The very thing that makes him exceptional also gives him a lethal weakness. Julius appears strong and composed, which people admire - but on the flip side, it makes others take him for granted, trusting that he will always be okay. He thus works himself into the ground because there isn't anyone telling him otherwise. It does not help either that he habitually distances himself from others; either through circumstance, by choice, or both. He finds it difficult to convey his negative and/or trivial emotions, and due to his mother's influence he has been led to believe that it was imperative to avoid doing so. He keeps everything bottled up inside even when his feelings were causing him torment; and it is this that led to his downfall.

At this point it is worth mentioning the relationship he has with his adoptive mother, Rachel. She had an ulterior motive in adopting and raising him - bending him to her will so that she could use him as a puppet to bring about the ruin of the world. Julius had no inkling of her motives until the very end, which shows both the effectiveness of her manipulation and his vulnerability to it. He has undergone not only field training as a child soldier but also physical experimentation, as well as seeing other people die violent deaths from said experimentation. As a result, he has a subtly altered perception of what is considered as normal.

[JULIUS]: I will not let any of you die... I swear it. This is the sole reason for which the God Arc Soldiers were built.

[CIEL]: ... Julius, let us join you. We can all work on this research together, as a team. If everyone pitches in, then -

[JULIUS]: No, Ciel, no. This is my duty... mine, and mine alone.

Julius always means well when he chooses his path. However, it does not always come to fruition. His natural response to stress and anguish is to simply throw himself into more work, which causes a deterioration in his mental state. He can be pushed into committing inhumane acts when under desperation. This seems extremely out of character for someone with a strong sense of justice, but one has to take into account that the choice was presented to him in a way that justified the cost. He is after all an utilitarian person, and his obsession with keeping his friends safe is enough to tip him over into morally ambiguous territory. Death is a very touchy subject for him, and the prospect of innocents being hurt can erode his sanity. In periods of altered mentality, he is capable of making impulsive decisions, which comes as a shock to those who know him.

Friends mean a great deal to Julius. He was raised without much social contact and thus treasures people who would speak to him. However, due to his deeds in the game, he also expects to be shunned on top of his natural tendency to avoid others when under stress. This makes him difficult to bond with if there is no common topic or duty. He needs reliable friends to look after his mental health in his place as he is ill-equipped to handle it himself. Rachel taught him to neglect it entirely and treated his despair as something honourable; something which is not easily unlearned at his age. In a roleplay setting, all of this can manifest as a ticking stress bomb that can implode in trying times.

[JULIUS]: I had a hand in developing the God Arc Soldiers. My hands are stained with inhumane deeds... I wish to show proof that those things cannot be tolerated.

[JULIUS]: That, and the sincerity of my remorse. I will not settle for mere words, I must prove this with my own actions.

Even so, Julius is a resilient person. With support, he is able to overcome his weaknesses and maintain his competency as a productive team member. At the end of his canon's storyline, he gives up his role as Captain and in turn becomes more stable (or as much as he can be given what has happened to him). He is also able to reflect on his decisions better if he has a clear mind. He does not expect to be forgiven for his mistakes, and only asks for a chance to make up for it. All in all, he is a person who will continue working for the betterment of others until he has nothing left to give.

CANON POWERS:
Let me preface this with an apology because boy does God Eater love to try explaining anime protagonist powers with science. Not all of it has been fully explained in the game so this is written with the information that is available now.

➛ Mundane

As someone who has served in his world's equivalent of a military since age 13, he is someone very proficient in combat, tactics and other related skills. Other abilities picked up in service include skill with technology, first aid, wilderness survival, and other things that would be expected for a Captain of his status to know. He's handy with 2070s era technology but not exceptionally so, since he doesn't have an engineer specialty.

➛ Physiology-based

At his current canon point, Julius is no longer human but a type of creature called Aragami. Essentially he's a mass of single-celled organisms called Oracle Cells controlled by a central core. The cells grant him physical strength and endurance higher than that of humans, as well as a keen awareness of the state of his own body, down to (unsurprisingly) the cellular level. He is able to take a humanoid appearance due to commanding the cells to assume such a form, and can pass for his previous human state given the strength of his willpower.

This also gives him the ability to change his shape by reorganizing his cellular structure. He's produced tentacles feathered tree branches from his back before, as well as generated a cocoon around himself. Given how diverse other Aragami are, he can also modify his body to take on other traits such as wings, vines, and extra limbs. By accessing the 'genetic memory' of other Aragami types, he can replicate their abilities if he so wishes.

The thing with Aragami is that they have an inborn desire to consume and absorb everything around them that isn't one of their own number. Julius has it particularly bad as his body holds a core with the strongest devouring instinct in his world - the Singularity. It's only through sheer willpower (and a helpful slap from his friends) that he's able to subdue it and stay in control of himself. If he were to use any of the Aragami forms, it would also mean subsuming some of their destructive instinct. The more he draws on this power, the higher his risk of going berserk. This also puts a cap on the amount of pain and other physical stresses that he can endure in practice. While CRAU development has enabled him to use a basal level of these shifting abilities without debilitating pain, accessing any powerful skills will still come with severe consequences.

In canon he has been overtaken by the Singularity instinct before, which resulted in the initiation of the Devouring Apocalypse, an event in which the entire Earth is consumed by a tidal wave of Oracle Cells. Triggering it is a two-part process, and Julius is one part of the key. However, since the other part involves a shitton of other Oracle Cells, it won't be unleashed in the game setting.

➛ Unique

Julius' Aragami form is named The One Who Opens The World. What separates it from the other Aragami in the series is its Singularity status, which is a core that is able to consume the entire world. It has very high combat ability as well as the capability to summon lasers/damaging projectiles, and serves as the final boss of his game. However, this is a high-risk form and assuming it fully takes a heavy toll on his body, so he chooses to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

Another ability that Julius has is his Power of Blood, named Control. With it he can 'wirelessly' activate/instruct other Oracle Cells. Aragami communicate with each other using pulses in a Bias Field, and it's hinted to be the force that allows an Aragami to hold itself together, since they constantly emit it. They're kind of like electromagnetic waves, except on a different type of field. They are detectable by sensors and serve as the predominant way that the Operators track Aragami and God Eaters. When two Bias Fields interact, a phenomenon called resonance happens. As it's only invoked in story-relevant scenes, it's not that important here.

For Control, it involves him strengthening his own field to affect those around him. With a suitable interfacer, he's able to control technology. At some point in his canon he commanded an entire robot army so That Is A Thing. This is an ability not affected by his Singularity status, so he can use it safely. It only affects Aragami and God Eaters; so it's not very useful by itself. However, particularly intense pulses can be felt by ordinary humans, such as those emitted by the Singularity, or when Julius taps into its powers.

Having a Power of Blood also grants the use of a Blood Art, which is kind of like a person's 'special move' for battle. It has not been explained in the game, so all we know about it is that it can be used with any object that matches the shape of the weapon the Blood Art is primed for. For Julius, his is Divine Galestrike, which lets him produce blades of air behind him to supplement a charge attack. Using it will also result in a Bias Field surge.

OTHER: God Eater has subtle dialogue differences between the EN and the JP versions. I'll be playing Julius from the JP version. Since this character in particular touches sometimes on emotional manipulation, body horror and other possibly offensive stuff, I'll warn for them when necessary.

In Spellbind, his Aragami physiology was nerfed in low-frequency worlds by making his shapeshifting ability and related high-powered skills (flight etc) inaccessible, but he still retains his cell hivemind physiology, the pain from him using his body as a seal for the Singularity core, as well as the enhanced endurance that comes with his new species. I'd like to keep that in Acata if it's possible.

As discussed on Plurk, he will be trapped in an Aragami cocoon until 9/5 as per RL circumstance. His sword will be impaled into the cocoon with him.

GAME INFO;

CRAU INFO:
Julius spent five months in Spellbind where he helped save a bunch of talking frogs from predatory fishbirds, went home to SUFFER in the singularity realm for a while, and then returned to being a captive and then busting the coven out of jail in Shehui.

The biggest change that his experiences have given him is to pull him somewhat out of his self-inflicted sense of worthlessness. He left his home world with the deep impression that he was unworthy of many things, including friendship, and helped people both out of his natural kindness and out of a desire to atone for his past crimes. His CR helped convince him that he is still someone capable of doing good things, and did not reject him despite who he was. That led him to become more open with people and willing to share his problems with them instead of thinking himself unworthy of their time. He has been told off for going Leeroy Jenkins into things, and it is a lesson that he takes to heart afterward.

He has also learned some about other worlds' cultures, and this cultivated his curiosity which he had put aside for his work. He is more sociable, while still retaining his introverted personality. He met several people who are able to put up with him despite him revealing his true nature, which has resulted in him being willing to trust others with his secrets more than before. Overall, he's easier to work with, but he will need to rebuild his CR network of people he can trust before he can maintain this development in the new setting.

MAGIC ABILITY: Plant regeneration.
He is able to will plants to grow using his body as a medium. This can range from sprouting flowers on his arms to temporarily grafting himself into a tree. The process will cause a good degree of pain and drain his vitality, but his willpower is strong enough to resist being incapacitated during the process. It also helps to dampen his Aragami instinct for a short while, making it easier for him to keep in control of himself.

ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?: His God Arc, Volitional, which was taken from him in SB. It's a 2 metre long artificial Aragami, which usually requires a high amount of maintenance to keep sedate - but since Julius has become the master key of all Aragami, he will be able to subdue it with his own abilities. So it's just a large sword that he may or may not choose to fuse with himself eventually....
